Vultr's discussion of infrastructure costs provides a useful starting point for looking beyond the opening price. When choosing a hosting commitment, compare offers over an equal period and keep the initial cash payment visible.
1. Choose your comparison horizon
Start with how long you expect to need the service. A funded two-year project needs a different comparison from a website with a three-year operating plan. Comparing only the first invoice would hide that difference.
Smiley Hoster's website FAQ, checked on October 9, 2026, says a two- or three-year commitment keeps the discounted price throughout the selected term. That statement does not by itself give your cart total or payment schedule. Record those from the relevant order summary.
Also note when the discounted period ends and what the subsequent renewal costs. Even when that renewal falls outside your comparison horizon, it matters to the person who will maintain the site later.
2. Build one complete scenario per term
Create a small comparison with the following fields:
- Exact plan name and included services.
- Period covered by the opening order.
- Amount requested at checkout.
- Further payments within your chosen horizon.
- Date and price of the following renewal.
Add the payments needed to cover the same period, then divide by the number of months to calculate an average. Only extend a displayed monthly rate across months for which that rate is explicitly confirmed.
For a three-year comparison, the annual scenario includes the opening year plus two annual renewals. The three-year scenario uses the actual quote for that commitment. Do not derive its total from an unrelated annual example in the FAQ.
Keep optional services separate until you have confirmed that both scenarios include the same things. Otherwise a cheaper total may simply cover less.
3. Check affordability as well as price
Show the total cost and the immediate payment side by side. A lower monthly average does not establish that the upfront payment fits your available budget.
Consider whether the selected plan will still suit the project during the commitment. If you expect a change, ask how it would affect the remaining term and price. An assumption about future growth is not a provider quote.
Save dated copies of the alternatives and your calculation. Review the terms attached to the actual order, including what applies if you stop early. You are ready to choose when the offers cover the same horizon, the totals are confirmed and the payment timing fits your plan.
